What are the health benefits of TWBV?

See our benefits pages for more information on health benefits.

How much / often should I use TWBV?
The answer depends on how TWBV is being used. If, for example, TWBV is being used to improve the efficiency of resistance exercises (i.e., working with weights and exercise postures), then the answer would be every other day for each muscle group, since muscles require 2 days of recovery between workout sessions.

If used for general wellness, every other day is sufficient. There are clear occupational health and safety guidelines that recognize that too much vibration (too intense and/or too long) is harmful. While 10 minutes per day at less than 1g falls very comfortably within these guidelines, we have found that one 10 minute session per day of whole body vibration (literally; meaning standing upright) is sufficient and more than this does not significantly improve the benefits.

For most people the frequency of use is more of a practical consideration; how often one can get to location that offers this form therapy. Private individuals who own TWBV devices will often use TWBV once or twice per day.

An important consideration in terms of the frequency of use is the strength of vibration. The Evolution allows the force of vibration to be adjusted with precision, from barely perceptible to the equivalent of one’s weight (1g). Hence more frequent use would be OK, as long as the vibration force is at a very mild setting.
Will more powerful vibration result in greater health benefits?
In terms of vibration force, as long as the following considerations are observed:
  • It must be possible to be completely relaxed (no tensing to resist the vibration).
  • User must feel comfortable and at ease.
  • Everyone should start low (around 15%) and gradually work up over a couple of weeks in order to acclimate the body and provide a reasonable time for any possible contraindications to surface.
  • Vibration force should be limited to 1g (Theravibe does this automatically).
Is there any special preparation before or after?
TWBV provides a tremendous boost to the circulation system, and the body’s response is to use this to aid elimination. Hence it is important to drink a glass or two of water after a TWBV session. This water will also aid the natural detoxifying effect that TWBV has on the body.

Drink a modest amount of water before your TWBV session, especially if you are feeling dehydrated. TWBV improves fluid balance in the body, so it should have ample fluid for this purpose. Do not drink excessively prior to TWBV.

It is best to wait at least an hour after a big meal or drinking large quantities of fluids before TWBV. Although TWBV simulates the internal organs and digestion, food sitting in the stomach may cause some physical discomfort, lessening an otherwise enjoyable experience.

Relax for a few minutes after TWBV to allow the body to assimilate the benefits of the session.

These are broad guidelines. The golden rule is to listen to your own body. Nobody knows it like you do.
Do I need to do anything special during TWBV?
Yes. Relax!

Relax the muscles, relax the joints, and breathe evenly and deeply through the session. Deep breathing means breathing into the lower areas of the lung, using the tummy muscles. If you find at any point that you are unconsciously tensing or resisting the vibration, then reduce the strength of the vibration using the control panel. Tensing interferes with the process and hence diminishes the benefits. Specifically, the results are much greater when relaxed at a low setting than when tense at a high setting.

Never lock the joints. When standing on the vibration platform, ensure that you don’t lock your knees. In other words, if you can still straighten them a bit more then you have got your stance just right. Bending the knees too much causes the vibration to be absorbed by the muscles of the legs and prevents the vibration from traveling through the whole body. While this is useful for strength training of the legs, it diminishes the all-round wellness benefits.

Do not slouch. Keep the chest open and breath full and deep into the lungs. Sometimes called diaphragmatic-breathing or tummy-breathing, air is drawn into the lungs and swelling the stomach. There are two reasons for this, first and most importantly, keeping the chest open helps lymphatic circulation by allowing an open return path. Secondly, tummy breathing improves the oxygen concentration of the blood. When coupled with the improved blood flow resulting from TWBV this provides even higher levels of cellular oxygenation.
Will TWBV help me lose weight?
Despite the fact that TWBV does not cause a significant increase in calorie consumption during a workout session, most people do lose weight when starting TWBV training, without making any other changes to their daily routine. While the mechanism of weight loss through TWBV is not yet fully understood, it is speculated that these factors play a part:
  • Improved blood circulation as a result of TWBV results in more oxygen and nutrition throughout the body. This improves energy levels that last for several hours. Improved energy levels often result in higher levels of physical activity and hence burning more calories throughout the day.
  • TWBV significantly increases lymph circulation, thereby improving fluid balance. The body is therefore better able to eliminate excessive stored liquid.
  • It is widely accepted that ingested toxins correlate with increase in weight. Hence improved elimination of waste and toxins (through increased lymphatic function) may cause a decrease in weight.
  • The best way to lose weight is through diet management and regular aerobic exercise.
Can TWBV be combined with regular exercise?
TWBV stimulates muscle fibers and has been shown through many studies to cause an increase in lean muscle mass. The amount of muscle development will depend upon how much work the muscles are doing. TWBV can be used for exercise by combining regular resistance or stretching exercise with TWBV, either simultaneously or one after the other.

Resistance exercises are more effective when combined with simultaneous TWBV because of the involuntary activation of the muscle fibers as a result of the vibration. So why not just use heavier weights? TWBV multiplies the effect of this resistance exercise without the same level of subjective effort. It doesn’t feel like you’re working out as hard as you are.

In addition, TWBV reduces muscle stiffness after a workout. For this purpose TWBV can be used during or directly after the workout. TWBV is also an effective way to prepare the muscles for resistance training.

Breaking down the benefits to the musculature even further, TWBV:

Improves "muscle efficiency". Improved oxygenation and hormone / nutrient delivery through improved circulation means that muscle cells are more effectively recruited to do work during exercise. This improves muscle performance and hence the rate of work.
Increases the rate of development of lean muscle mass in conjunction with high load resistance exercise. This is due to improved circulation and the involuntary firing of the muscle spindle (caused by the vibration).
Vibration training in conjunction with light loading improves muscle tone. Users will often comment that they can feel the muscles tightening during TWBV.
How should I get started with TWBV?
TWBV may be an unfamiliar experience and you may have sensitivity to even very low levels of vibration. Hence we recommend that you always start at very low strength, increasing gradually to the normal setting of 50% over the course of the first two weeks.

Depending on one’s state of health, the body will react differently to the first few sessions of TWBV. If your body is in serious need of cleansing, then the effects of the first session or two will be deep detoxification. Detoxification can result in discomfort in the day following TWBV. Be sure to drink plenty of water when your TWBV session is complete.

It is always best to gradually acclimatize to TWBV. Listen to your body and always be comfortable during TWBV.
Should I check with my doctor before using TWBV?
Yes, although the strength of the vibration needs to be taken into account. For example, if the vibration is reduced to where it is almost imperceptible, then there are few, if any, contraindications. The contraindications below are typical for average vibration settings and are necessarily conservative. It is always recommended that you check with your healthcare provider.
